The Details

Mexico

Baja California Sur

What + Where

The thumb to the palm that is the majority of Mexico, Baja California Sur (BCS) is a peninsula spanning over 120 kilometers from the (in)famous Tijuana in the north to Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip.

Brief History Lesson

BCS is one of the later lands of discovery–originally thought to be an island by conquistador Hernán Cortez in the mid-sixteenth century. Bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California and Sea of Cortez to the east, this mountain-laden desert scape is home to some great culture, food, and golf.

Notables including John Steinbeck, Desi Arnaz, Bing Crosby, Carlos Santana and Sammy Hagar (see: Cabo Wabo Cantina) have all left a mark on the region and have drawn influence from its rich heritage. BCS surprisingly has roots stemming from Chinese and Japanese original to those of Italian and French heritage. Needless to say, a vacation here doesn't have to look like a revolving door to Taco Bell's especialidades. Your stomach thanks you.

Our Adventure

Our venture is to the southernmost Los Cabos region--known as a tourist haven. More than just sunshine and tequila, Los Cabos is a golf mecca. With over 300 days of sunshine, it's a great investment in the land. Jack Nicklaus' championship designs reign supreme in what used to be merely an angler's paradise, surrounded by the company of design greats Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Tom Fazio, Tom Weiskopf, Davis Love III, and the first successful course completion of Tiger Woods amongst others. The master plan for the region calls for nearly a dozen championship courses saturating an area a mere 30-or-so kilometers wide. (That's less than a marathon!)  Courses take full advantage of the picture-perfect mountain, desert, cliff and seaside coastline.

Thanks to my Duolingo app, I've dusted off the Español I once knew in high school in the few weeks leading up to our journey. While I might be limited to asking for a taxi (how do I say this) or brewski (¡Cerveza fría, por favor!), I feel I'm prepared enough to enjoy all-inclusive resort bliss and world-class golf.

Our resort is the, adults-only, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, located just outside the bustle of downtown Cabo on a remote beach. More importantly, this resort grants us access to the Golf Magazine's Best New International Golf Course of 2014, Golf Inc.'s Best New Development of 2014, and Nicklaus design, Quivira. Following suit with many other notable golf darlings around the globe, Quivira is exclusive to residents and guests of the community and its resorts.  New to the scene in 2014, Quivira is anticipated to rival our other round at Cabo del Sol's Ocean Course for the best of Baja.  Both rank high in anticipation and are sure to provide a memorable trip.
